Course Overview

Our Aerospace Engineering degree gives you expert training in the theory and operation of aeronautical vehicles, from jet-powered and propeller-driven planes to gliders and helicopters.

You will learn about the full engineering journey, from concept on the ground to handling in the sky. Whether your main interest is design, analysis, testing or flight, at Swansea we have it covered!

Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University is a member of the prestigious Aerospace Research Consortium (ARC) group of universities

Your Aerospace Engineering Experience

This course provides a real world insight into the atmosphere of our planet and the cosmos beyond, as well as the technologies needed to explore them. You will develop your analytical abilities whilst gaining hands-on experience of state-of-the-art equipment, vital to securing employment in the wider aerospace industry.

In your first year you can take a flying lesson and throughout your course will be working with facilities like the Merlin MPX521 Engineering Flight Simulator, the JetCat P120 Engine and multiple wind tunnels ensuring you are always fully up to speed.

Aerospace Engineering Employment Opportunities

Our graduates are set on course for a range of exciting employment opportunities including:

  • Airline Pilot
  • High Speed Railway Engineer
  • Flight Test Engineer
  • Aerodynamicist in Motorsport and Sustainable Energy Sector

Our graduates go on to have interesting and varied careers at companies such as Rolls Royce, Airbus, BAE Systems, GE Aviation, Royal Air Force and Jaguar Land Rover. Six months after graduating, our average graduate salary is £25,000.

This course offers you the opportunity to spend a YEAR IN INDUSTRY (UCAS H402), in the UK or overseas, giving valuable workplace experience as well as a salary that is currently over £15,000 on average. Support and guidance is provided to help secure your placement.

We also offer you the option to spend a YEAR ABROAD (UCAS 401) at a partner university which enriches the degree, giving a valuable cultural experience which can broaden your horizons when seeking employment.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching. 

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.  

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Professional Body Accreditation

The BEng Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the educational requirement for Engineering Council registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).  Study on this accredited degree will provide you with some of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed as a Chartered Engineer. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by many countries that are signatories to international accords.

Additional Costs

Access to your own digital device/the appropriate IT kit will be essential during your time studying at Swansea University. Access to wifi in your accommodation will also be essential to allow you to fully engage with your programme. You may face additional costs while at university, including (but not limited to):

Recommended textbooks for this course are available in the library. All software needed for the course is available on the Engineering network, for use within our PC rooms at Swansea University.

I secured a job with BMW MINI plant in Swindon before my graduation. I am currently working as a Production Specialist.

My job role is to provide engineering support to the production team, work on new ways to increase efficiency as well as the quality of the product we create here, resolve existing issues. I am also involved with writing work instructions for our associates on how to load stations within cycle time for the robots to work 100% effectively.

Best part of my job is the opportunity to travel within UK and abroad to improve my skills and gain new ones! I’m very much looking forward to my future placements with the other businesses of BMW.

Studying Aerospace Engineering at Swansea has definitely prepared me for my job role as it is one of the hardest subjects and requires a huge amount of time to be put in, in order to get a good result. The massive amount of course works and the difficult modules has improved my time management and attention to details. I have also improved my presentation skill as we were required to give several presentations during the length of the course.
