Course Overview

Civil engineers are vital to the design of our built environment. From bridges, tunnels and transport systems, to buildings, flood defences and water management, their performance is fundamental to modern society.

This degree gives you a strong grounding in the design and analysis of Civil Engineering structures. You will develop complex problem-solving skills, gain the ability to sketch and model engineering solutions and become comfortable preparing technical reports.

As you progress, your developing analytical abilities will combine with hands-on experience of state-of-the-art equipment, establishing skills which are vital to securing employment in the civil engineering industry.

Why Civil Engineering at Swansea?

  • 10th in the UK Civil Engineering (Daily Mail University Guide 2025)
  • Top 201-275 in the World for Engineering – Civil & Structural (QS World University Rankings 2025)

This course offers you the opportunity to spend a YEAR IN INDUSTRY (UCAS H202), in the UK or overseas, giving valuable workplace experience as well as a salary that is currently over £15,000 on average. Support and guidance is provided to help secure your placement.

We also offer you the option to spend a YEAR ABROAD (UCAS H206) at a partner university which enriches the degree, giving a valuable cultural experience which can broaden your horizons when seeking employment.

Our BEng programme allows applicants to build their skills and bridge towards our MEng programme.

Your Civil Engineering Experience

Studying a modern degree with close connections to the rapidly evolving industry, you will learn about current design practices and the latest engineering standards. We will nurture your computer modelling skills by encouraging you to develop your own software to analyse real world civil engineering problems.

You will benefit from working with advanced facilities including high grade laboratories for structures teaching and materials testing. Our fluids laboratory has a five metre experimental flume and a geomechanics laboratory. You can also use our sophisticated high speed cameras for strain analysis and 3D imaging.

Civil Engineering Employment Opportunities

Hannah Keating

Hannah Keating graduated from Swansea in Civil Engineering and joined Laing O’Rourke as a Site Engineer as part of their Graduate Programme.

"...I didn’t get to where I am today without the support of my family, friends, lecturers and teachers. Going into a male dominated field has never really bothered me and this is mostly due to the encouragement from those close to me. I would like to take this opportunity to reciprocate this and help inspire young engineers by sharing my story."

Civil Engineering graduates are set on course for a range of exciting employment opportunities including:

  • Site Engineer
  • Structural Engineer
  • Town Planner
  • Building Services Engineer
  • Engineering Geologist
  • Environmental Consultant
  • Quantity Surveyor

Our graduates go on to have interesting and varied careers at companies such as, Atkins, Arup, Mott MacDonald, AECOM, Jacobs and Rolls-Royce.
