Course Overview

Mechanical engineers transform pioneering ideas into ground-breaking inventions. The discipline helps to invent, design and manufacture many of the machines we use on a daily basis.

Our Mechanical Engineering degree prepares you for a rewarding career in a range of engineering sectors.

As you progress, your developing analytical abilities will combine with hands-on experience of advanced equipment, establishing skills which are vital to securing employment in the wider industry.

This course offers you the opportunity to spend a YEAR IN INDUSTRY (UCAS H306), in the UK or overseas, giving valuable workplace experience as well as a salary that is currently over £15,000 on average. Support and guidance is provided to help secure your placement.

We also offer you the option to spend a YEAR ABROAD (UCAS H309) at a partner university which enriches the degree, giving you a valuable cultural experience which can broaden your horizons when seeking employment.

Your Mechanical Engineering Experience

You will work closely with our state-of-the-art facilities throughout your time in Swansea.

These include a dynamics mechanics laboratory, a fluids laboratory and our JetCat P120 engine test room. We also have cutting edge units for digital manufacturing and robotics.

Modules

Modules build on established mechanical principles for application within a wide range of sectors. You will mostly study a set series of 10-credit modules, culminating in a final year 30-credit research project.

Later study options allow you to specialise by taking either the design pathway or the manufacturing pathway.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching. 

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

Professional Body Accreditation

The MEng Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the educational requirement for Engineering Council registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Study on this accredited degree will provide you with some of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed as a Chartered Engineer. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by many countries that are signatories to international accords.

Additional Costs

Access to your own digital device/the appropriate IT kit will be essential during your time studying at Swansea University. Access to wifi in your accommodation will also be essential to allow you to fully engage with your programme. I’m currently working as a SAP Maintenance Planner at Body in White technology, in BMW MINI, Plant Oxford. My work primarily involves providing SAP support to the Central Maintenance and the production team, reporting to the managerial level and director on technology performance, as well as working on various projects to support the current and the new vehicle manufacturing process.
