Course Overview

If you don’t quite have the grades needed to enter the BSc Marine Biology programme, then this 4-year undergraduate degree, which includes an integrated Foundation Year, could be for you.

A Foundation Year is a great way to gain the knowledge and skills needed to embark on to the BSc Marine Biology programme; you will be introduced to key themes of study, as well as having many opportunities to pick up new study skills that will be of use to you throughout your time at Swansea University. The Foundation Year is also flexible, and allows you to enter any of our Biosciences programmes on completion, should your ambitions change during the year.

Due to vital ongoing issues with our oceans, an academic understanding of ocean life across the world has never been more important. This Marine Biology degree is highly practical and fieldwork-based. When combined with our unique location, this gives you ideal access to a variety of study habitats to explore during your degree, which include exposed rocky shores, steep cliffs salt marshes and estuarine mudflats; all on the Gower Peninsula, which was the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

You will embark on exciting fielBiosciences Field Coursesd courses available both near and far, which allow you to work in varied habitats, exploring the spectacular marine coastal ecosystems of the Gower Peninsula on our doorstep, and natural life in distant lands such as India, Borneo, and the Red Sea. You will also receive training at sea during your third year of this programme.

A flexibly structured degree path means you will have the opportunity to study abroad, work in industry or undertake research for a year, either locally, nationally or overseas, expanding your horizons and gaining valuable experience ready for the world of work. These additional years would take place during your third and fourth years of study, leading to a 5-year degree in total.
