Discover how natural, social and physical processes shape our world and develop the skills and knowledge to respond to global challenges like inequality and climate change.

Swansea Geography is a large, diverse community. Our home is the Wallace Building, the first purpose-built geography department in the UK. We deliver all aspects of human and physical geography and offer environmental science, geoscience and climate emergency programmes.

Our Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) accredited degrees cover critical principles of human and physical geography, and key technical skills such as in GIS (Geographical Information Systems), earth sciences, and quantitative and qualitative methods.

Join us in a unique place for geography, moments from the coastline of the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to two of Wales’ three national parks, and within walking distance of our city’s museums and art galleries.

At Swansea:

  • Our regular local field trips take advantage of the South Wales environment.
  • International modules help you develop practical and field skills, studying in global cities like Berlin and Vancouver, and unique locations such as the Indian Himalayas.
  • Our field courses are also designed with their footprint in mind, and we offer low carbon field modules, currently to the Isles of Scilly.
  • Our global research informs our teaching, and our department, with its central social hub giving you time and space to spend with academics and your student community.
  • You can enhance your degree with a year abroad, or enhance your employability via our year in industry.
  • The geographical skills embedded in our programmes are designed to prepare you for the employment market. Our graduates go on to a wide range of careers across a range of sectors.
  • Our foundation programmes in Geography and Environmental Science and the Climate Emergency give additional time to develop knowledge and skills on a four-year BSc with a foundation year.
