Course Overview

Our Film and Visual Culture, BA (Hons) is an exciting new interdisciplinary program aimed at students who are interested in exploring a wide spectrum of visual culture and film.

You will have the chance to explore rich media histories and contemporary culture through diverse social media platforms, video gaming, creative media and more.

On modules lead by leading academics and industry professionals, you will learn how to close read and contextualise film and television texts whilst also gaining skills and experience in film production and writing for radio and screen.

Film and Visual Culture, BA (Hons) will give you the practical and intellectual skills you need for an exciting career in the media, marketing, or related fields, as well as key transferable skills which are valued by employers and open up a range of wider career opportunities.

Why Film and Visual Culture at Swansea?

Our course is based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking the beautiful beaches of Swansea Bay and located on the edge of the Gower Peninsula (the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

We are home to the archive of stage and screen star Richard Burton, and to the Taliesin Arts Centre – an exciting hub for cinema, theatre and the arts.

  • You will study with leading academics who will introduce you to key critical concepts and debates in the fields of Film and Visual Culture;
  • You will have access state-of-the-art audio-visual production studio facilities and audio-visual equipment;
  • You can use our Virtual Reality lab and Virtual Reality equipment, which is currently used for both teaching and research purposes;
  • We will boost your employability and experience through our well-established media production, creative industries, and publishing internship opportunities with a wide range of external and internal partners;
  • You will benefit from teaching staff within the department who have extensive industry experience across a variety of relevant not-for-profit and commercial sectors.

Your Film and Visual Culture Experience

This undergraduate programme spans a wide range of aspects of visual culture and film, encompassing film theory, the analysis of screen industries, learning about storytelling techniques across different media forms, and key techniques in analysing and close reading a variety of visual texts. It offers a combination of theory and practice within three pillars: Film, Visual Culture, and Practice.

You will study at least one module from all three pillars at each level of the programme with the flexibility to choose your own specialism. This will enable you to shape your course to match your career goals as well as developing your own interests.

We also offer a year in industry or work placement which will give you first-hand experience, and you will have the option of studying a year abroad.

You will have a Personal Tutor for any support you need, and there is the opportunity to study some modules through the medium of Welsh.

Film and Visual Culture Employment Opportunities

Anticipated career outcomes range from:

  • Media Production
  • Publicity
  • Publishing

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.
