Course Overview

Turn your interests in human biology and health and wellbeing into a rewarding and valued career with our degree course in Cardiac Physiology.

You will gain the scientific, clinical, and technical knowledge needed to provide specialised care to people living with or suspected of having cardiac disease.

Studying the anatomy and physiology of the heart, together with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, you will combine in-depth academic work with practical clinical skills in a range of specialised healthcare settings.

Cardiac Physiology is an exciting and rapidly developing field that requires a high level of responsibility and problem-solving ability. As a cardiac physiologist, you will be expected to carry out some work that used to be in the remit of doctors and there are many opportunities for specialist role extension as your career progresses.

Why Cardiac Physiology at Swansea?

Our course is accredited by the National School of Healthcare and Science and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiology.

Many of our academic staff are also practising healthcare scientists, providing an unrivalled combination of scientific rigour and professional expertise.

If you can commit to working in Wales for two years after graduating, you could get your tuition fees covered in full through the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme, as well as maintenance funding and a reduced-rate loan from Student Finance.

Please see our NHS Funding webpage to check your eligibility for funding before applying.

Your Cardiac Physiology experience

Our excellent facilities include a realistic clinical suite so you can put your theoretical knowledge into practice in an environment that reflects as closely as possible the actual conditions that you will experience when you go on placement.

You will also benefit from a real-life patient setting in our award winning Health and Wellbeing Academy, an on-site clinic that provides health and wellbeing services for the local community in collaboration with the NHS.

Half your course will be taught at our Singleton Park campus on the edge of the beautiful Gower Peninsula and the other half will take place in healthcare settings.  We have very strong links with healthcare providers and Welsh health boards, opening up a wide range of clinical placement opportunities for you.

Cardiac Physiology Careers

On graduation, you will be eligible to join the voluntary register with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists or the Academy of Healthcare Science and enter the workplace as an independent practitioner.

The NHS starting salary for Cardiac Physiologists is £28,407, rising to £50,056 with the potential to earn more when you complete an additional doctoral qualification. There are also excellent prospects to work in research, education, management, Her Majesty’s Forces, governmental departments and the private sector.

You can find more information on our Healthcare Science degrees by visiting our Quick Guide.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

The course is split between work placements during 58 weeks and teaching for 66 weeks across the three years. During this time, you will have the opportunity to put your learning directly into practice through a range of interesting clinical experiences.

We will assess your learning through written, oral and practical exams, assignments, dissertations and presentations.

You will have the opportunity to spend placement time in a variety of hospitals from large tertiary centres to small district generals.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.
