Course Overview

Our Occupational Therapy course will give you the skills and experience to launch a rewarding career in this diverse and essential profession.

Occupational therapists work to empower people to develop, maintain or improve a diverse range of activities that are relevant and meaningful in their daily lives, from basic self-care at home to work-related activities, hobbies and more.  Throughout this integrated course, you will learn the skills to help people overcome difficulties caused by illness, disability, accidents or ageing.  This could involve the use of aids and adaptations, modifying tasks or developing new skills.

The course follows a spiral design based around 5 key curriculum themes to help you develop the knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence required to be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to become a registered occupational therapist:

  • Occupational Concepts for Well Being and Practice
  • Enhancing Occupational Therapy
  • Practice Placement
  • Professionalism and Leadership
  • Research, Enquiry & Digitalisation

Why Occupational Therapy at Swansea?

Our teaching staff have many years of experience as occupational therapists, working in a variety of settings including NHS, Social Care, Private and Third sectors. Our students tell us that our enthusiasm and passion motivates and inspires them to work hard, think differently and succeed.

The course is approved and accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council, The Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

All of the teaching team are registered occupational therapists providing professional expertise and theoretical knowledge.

If you can commit to working in Wales for two years after graduating, you could get your tuition fees covered in full through the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme, as well as maintenance funding and a reduced rate loan from Student Finance.

Please see our NHS Funding webpage to check your eligibility for funding before applying.

Your Occupational Therapy Experience

Our excellent facilities in the School of Health and Social Care include realistic clinical suites so you can learn practical skills in a safe, supervised environment before using them in a real-life situation. You will have access to workplace experiences across Hywel Dda and Swansea Bay University Health Boards and other health and social care settings.

Your course will be taught at our Singleton Park campus on the edge of the beautiful Gower Peninsula and thirty weeks of teaching will take place in key clinical placements within the NHS and community facilities.

Occupational Therapy Careers

Completion of this course will enable you to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to become a registered occupational therapist.  You can expect a starting salary of £28,407 rising to £50,056 for a highly experienced Occupational Therapist.

Occupational Therapy is a rewarding career that allows you to make a real difference to people’s independence and quality of life. There are many opportunities to specialise, for example working with older adults, in rehabilitation services, social care or with children, people with mental health issues or who have a learning disability.

Any offer of a place will also require:

  • A satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Applications from potential learners who have a criminal conviction will be considered on an individual basis with reference to the most current HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.  We have an established mechanism for dealing with such situations through Fitness to Practise processes. How You're Taught

You will experience a mixture of face-to-face and virtual teaching, self-directed study and practice-based placements in three different settings over the duration of your course. Study will be guided by a dedicated occupational therapy staff team to help you learn in theory-led, practical and placement learning settings.

You will spend around 1050 hours in total on placement, engaging with practice partners and people using occupational therapy services.  Placements can be in rural or urban settings and enable you to learn about how occupational therapy can be effective with people who have a range of different needs.  This will help you learn the knowledge, skills and professionalism required to work alongside a wide range of people with physical, mental health or social needs. Opportunity is also provided to learn about the importance of inter-professional collaboration to enrich the experience of people using services and their caregivers.

Information for Part-Time Students

Part-time students will be required to attend campus once a week for teaching however, for placement blocks students are expected to attend these full-time. Part-time students will also be expected to attend one full week of on-campus teaching each term, when not on placement. In their 4th year, there will be a 2-week attendance requirement for the specialist practitioner module. Across the 4 years, placements account for 8 weeks in year 1, 10 weeks in year 3, and 12 weeks in year 4.

We recommend that part-time students spend an extra day each week on their studies to help them with their academic progress. Students in employment will need to negotiate the necessary time for their student-directed study with their employer.
