Course Overview

Studying for a BSc in Paramedic Science will give you the essential skills, knowledge, and attributes to begin an exciting and rewarding career as a Registered Paramedic.

You will learn about anatomy and physiology, the major body systems and the conditions that affect them, how to assess patients and identify life-threatening conditions, and how to administer life support.

You will also develop an understanding of the role and relevance of research, concepts of patient care, and legal and ethical principles relating to healthcare.

Why Paramedic Science at Swansea?

We have over ten years’ experience supporting learner paramedics through their educational journey and are the only provider of Paramedic Science training in Wales.

Our course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council, enabling you to apply for registered status on completion of the course. This is a legal requirement for anyone who wishes to practise as a paramedic.

Many of our teaching staff are also registered paramedics who still work in practice, providing an unrivalled combination of academic rigour and professional expertise.

If you can commit to working in Wales for two years after graduating, you could get your tuition fees covered in full through the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme, as well as maintenance funding and a reduced rate loan from Student Finance.

Please see our NHS Funding webpage to check your eligibility for funding before applying.

Your Paramedic Science experience

Our excellent facilities in the School of Health and Social Care include a realistic clinical suite so you can learn practical skills in a safe, supervised environment before using them in a real-life situation. You will also have access to realistic workplace experiences at the Welsh National Ambulance training centre.

Together with face-to-face learning activities, you will use digital solutions, such as Learning Space for clinical simulations, where you will receive immediate and detailed video feedback to enhance clinical learning and to facilitate the development of essential paramedic skills.

Virtual reality will be used to enhance anatomy teaching, allowing you to visualise organ systems and their relationships within the body.

Half of your course will be taught at our Singleton Park campus on the edge of the beautiful Gower Peninsula and the other half will take place in key clinical placements within the NHS and at Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust facilities.

These placements will include working on board operational ambulances, as well as with colleagues in hospital settings such as theatres, and accident and emergency departments.

Paramedic Science Careers

Most of our Paramedic Science graduates take up clinical roles, either within the NHS or the private sector. The NHS starting salary for registered paramedics is around £28,407 plus up to 25% unsocial hours payment. Private sector salaries may be considerably more depending on the setting.

There are opportunities for paramedics with the appropriate clinical experience and educational profile to go on to become Specialist Practitioners, Advanced Paramedic Practitioners, or Consultant Paramedics. There are also opportunities to move into management or education.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

You will benefit from a flexible, blended learning approach, including lectures, seminars, computer assisted learning, clinical practice, service user involvement, simulation, mentoring sessions plus a full range of NHS e-learning modules, e.g., Violence & Aggression training, manual handling, patient assessment, etc.

You will study half of the theory at university and half in practice so you will be able to put your academic learning into real clinical practice settings supported by experience Health care practitioners. To develop interpersonal skills and support insight into ambulance services; the first placement will be 3 weeks with the Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) with WAST and one day in one of the regional clinical contact centres situated within Wales.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.
