Learn about the science behind drugs and medicines, their effects on living systems, and their role in treating disease on our Medical Pharmacology degree course.

You will cover a diverse range of topics, including pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacogenomics, physiology, chemistry, genetics, immunology, and drug development. You will be able to tailor your studies to your own interests with optional modules including cardiovascular science, diabetes, cancer pharmacology, reproductive biology, neuroscience and nanotoxicology.

You will develop excellent analytical and project management skills, and learn how to design experiments and plan work programmes to prepare you for your future careers.

The Medical Pharmacology course curriculum has been developed using the British Pharmacological Society’s Undergraduate Curriculum which aims to develop core knowledge, core skills and core attitudes in the next generation of pharmacologists. The course also embraces the British Pharmacological Society’s Inclusive Principles for Undergraduate Pharmacology, which our Programme Director, Dr Aidan Seeley, helped develop.

A mix of compulsory and optional modules gives you the scope to tailor your studies to your particular interests, career goals, or plans for postgraduate study.

You will benefit from access to the state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities at the Medical School, including our research laboratories.

This degree is part of our ‘Medical Science in Practice’ Pathway to Medicine programme. Provided you meet the minimum entry requirements for Graduate Entry Medicine, and have successfully completed the Pathway, you will be guaranteed an interview for our flagship Medicine (Graduate Entry) MBBCh course.

Your Medical Pharmacology Experience

You can choose to study Medical Pharmacology as a:

  • 3-year BSc,
  • 4-year BSc with a year in industry in the form of a placement year,
  • 4-year BSc with a year abroad, or a
  • 4-year MSci with an integrated master’s level qualification

Studying the 3-year BSc, you will undertake a mix of compulsory and optional modules, giving you the flexibility to tailor your degree to your particular interests, career ambitions, or plans for further study.

Adding a year abroad, as part of the 4-year BSc option, allows you to add invaluable international experience to your CV while building intercultural communication skills that will improve your ability to interact with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Our 4-year MSci is an advanced undergraduate degree with an integrated master’s year, with the extra year spent undertaking a research project, allowing you to develop your skills and knowledge.

Medical Pharmacology Employment Opportunities

Medical Pharmacology has been identified as a critical undergraduate degree, required to fill the current workforce and skills gaps in medicine and pharmaceutical development.

You could also pursue a career or further study in other fields including academic and industrial research, regulation, patent law, medical writing, education or clinical trials.

Modules

The 3-Year BSc structure is as follows:

Your first year is made up of compulsory modules covering the fundamentals of physiology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology and toxicology.

In year 2 you choose one of 3 Employability Strands (subject to eligibility): Medical Science in Practice, Enterprise and Innovation, and Medical Science in Research.

As you progress, you will further develop your knowledge, studying specialised topics including pharmacogenomics, metabolic regulation, human immunology,  antimicrobial resistance, and analytical, forensic and clinical toxicity.

In your third year, you will complete an independent research project under the guidance of a professional research scientist, and study further specialised modules such as drug development and regulation with the option to tailor your studies in topics including; cancer pharmacology, reproductive biology, neuroscience, and nanotoxicology.

If you choose to undertake a year abroad, this will take place between the second and third years of study listed above.
