Course Overview

Studying Psychology will give you expert scientific training in the relationship between the mind, brain, and behaviour.

You will study the psychological and neuro-scientific processes that underpin activities such as thinking, reasoning, memory and language, learn about the effects of brain injury, and explore ways to improve health-related behaviour.

You will develop excellent research, written, and critical analysis skills, as well as a high degree of numeracy and ICT ability.

Our approach to teaching, which includes lectures, personal tutorials, academic seminars, workshops, and practical research classes, encourages effective team-working and high-quality oral communication skills.

The course is validated by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and, providing you achieve at least a 2:2 in your degree, you will be eligible for Graduate Membership of the BPS and the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), the first step to becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Your Psychology experience

You can choose to study Psychology as a 3-year BSc, a 4-year MSci degee, or a 4-year BSc that includes a Year in Industry or a Year Abroad.

Our 3-year BSc has a flexible degree structure with an extensive range of final year optional modules gives you the scope to tailor your studies to your particular interests, career goals, or ambitions for postgraduate study.

The 4-year MSci Psychology is an advanced undergraduate degree, adding a further year to our well-established BSc Psychology degree. This course is an ideal option for high-performing and career-focused individuals who wish to stand out by tailoring their advanced study of psychology in line with their career and developmental aspirations. In the final year, you will have access to a range of truly masters-level modules, allowing you to create a bespoke experience that caters to your interests. These options cover a diverse range of topics including clinical psychology, mental health, and research methods. MSci students will also have access to an exclusive ‘Psychology Research Skills in Practice’ module which gives students hands-on experience in a research assistant role, working alongside research experts at the School of Psychology as part of their ongoing state-of-the-art research programmes. This module enables students to develop advanced research skills including primary data collection, meta-analyses, secondary data analysis on large datasets and research dissemination. This experience is valuable preparation for research careers, and also provides many transferable skills valuable for other careers.

The 4-year BSc in Psychology with a Year in Industry* offers an additional year in industry to our BSc Psychology course. This additional year provides the opportunity to experience work in industry, allowing you to build your confidence and gain real-world experience.

Our 4-year BSc with a Year Abroad gives you the exciting opportunity to spend a year immersing yourself in a new culture at one of our international partner institutions. During this year, you will have space to grow while developing your independence, international experience and intercultural communication skills that can all serve you well in your future career.

 

Psychology Careers

As this BPS accredited degree is the first step towards pursuing a professional career in Psychology, many of our graduates have gone on to further study or work in specialist psychology fields.

The typical starting salary for an NHS trainee clinical psychologist is £35,392. As your career progresses you could earn between £50,056 and £96,376 or higher. Salaries in private practice vary.

The experience and skills you will gain on this course will also equip you well for careers in other areas of health and social care, as well as sectors as varied as management, research, and marketing.
