BSc Economics (Top Up Degree) enables you to top up your higher education qualification to a bachelor’s degree even if you have not studied Economics previously.  

Our one-year top up degree focusses on the core elements of economics such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and quantitative methods attractive to applicants with a background in subjects such as maths, science, finance or statistics.

Modules on the Top Up Degree are co-taught with the BSc Economics programme ensuring that you benefit from mixed cohorts and gain insight from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds to enhance your cross-cultural understanding and develop networks.

Your Economics (Top Up Degree) Experience

Our Economics (Top Up Degree) provides an understanding of modern economic principles and a comprehensive knowledge base of micro and macro economics, mathematics, statistics, methodological considerations and applied topic areas.

From the moment you arrive at the School of Social Sciences we will work with you to help build your skills and experience to enhance your career prospects. 

You will have unlimited one to one bespoke careers advice from our dedicated careers team. You may be able to go on a work placement or internship through the Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN).

You will have the opportunity to participate in forums hosted by the Swansea University Economics Society; meet and learn from successful entrepreneurs and receive business advice from professional advisers, as well as having the chance to pitch for seed funding and mentorship through the Faculty’s annual pitching competition.

By effectively ‘studying abroad in the UK’, you will have the opportunity to substantially develop your English language skills and gain enhanced intercultural awareness, attributes that are highly sought after in the job market.

The BSc Economics degree, which the Economics (Top Up Degree) shadows, has an excellent reputation for producing elite graduates, many of whom have progressed to work with world-leading brands such as Barclays, HSBC and PwC.

As well as preparing you for your chosen career in the global economics market, this degree is perfect for those with aspirations to further their education at postgraduate level.  Upon successful completion of this degree with a classification of lower second class or higher, students are equipped for entry onto relevant postgraduate programmes such as MSc Economics.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will typically have studied a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent.  Ideally, applicants will have a quantitative background in a subject allied to economics such as International Economy and Trade; Business and Management; Financial Management, Finance, Mathematics and Statistics where there is evidence of principles of economics having previously been studied.  Applicants with a background in science subjects such as Civil Engineering, could also be accepted if there is evidence of quantitative modules having previously been taken.  In summary, applicants will typically have experience of introductory economic principles or a strong quantitative background.

Students will be admitted on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

As a guideline, below are examples of the overall grades we would typically accept, subject to a match in prior study:

  • SQA - Grade B classification overall
  • HND - Merit
  • Associate Degree GPA 3.0 or 75%
  • Dazhuan - 75%

For students who fall short of only the English language requirement we offer a range of pre-sessional training programmes that you may take before starting your degree programme.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Unfortunately, there is currently no formal Welsh-medium provision on this course. Whilst this course does not offer academic content delivered in Welsh, the University can provide you with the following, and Academi Hywel Teifi is here to support you:

  • An interview through the medium of Welsh when applying for a place.
  • The option to receive your personal correspondence in Welsh, English or bilingually.
  • The option to write and submit your coursework or exams through the medium of Welsh (even if you have chosen to study in English), and your work will be marked in Welsh.

Additional Costs

Access to your own digital device/the appropriate IT kit will be essential during your time studying at Swansea University. Access to wifi in your accommodation will also be essential to allow you to fully engage with your programme. Spaces are limited and subject to a competitive selection process. In the event you do not secure a semester/year abroad placement, you will be transferred to the standard variant of your degree scheme without a semester or year abroad.
