Course Overview

Our Education and Psychology degree will give you expert scientific training in the relationship between the mind, brain, and behaviour, together with an excellent grounding in education policy, child development, and educational neuroscience.

You will develop an in-depth understanding of educational practice in a digital age, education in national and international contexts, leadership and management, and diversity and wellbeing in education.

You will learn about the psychological and neuro-scientific processes that underpin activities such as thinking, reasoning, memory and language, developing a solid foundation in cognitive, social, developmental, clinical, and biological psychology.

Throughout your studies, you will develop excellent research, critical analysis, and communication skills, as well as a high degree of numeracy and ICT ability.

Why Education and Psychology at Swansea?

Education at Swansea is ranked:

  • Top 15 in the UK for Research Quality (Complete University Guide 2025)

The Psychology element of the degree is validated by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and, providing you achieve at least a 2:2 in your degree, you will be eligible for Graduate Membership of the BPS and for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), the first step to becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Your Education and Psychology Experience

You can choose to study Education and Psychology as a 3-year BSc or a 4-year BSc that includes a Year Abroad.

On both programmes, our flexible degree structure with an extensive range of final year optional modules gives you the scope to tailor your studies to your particular interests, career goals, or ambitions for post-graduate study.

Work placements in schools, local authorities, business, or charities will enhance your career prospects and build your experience and interpersonal skills.

If you choose to undertake the 4-year BSc with a Year Abroad, you will have the exciting opportunity to spend a year immersing yourself in a new culture at one of our international partner institutions. During this year, you will have space to grow while developing your independence, international experience and intercultural communication skills that can all serve you well in your future career.

Education and Psychology Employment Opportunities

As this BPS accredited degree is the first step towards pursuing a professional career in Psychology, many of our graduates have gone on to further study or work in specialist psychology fields.

The typical starting salary for an NHS trainee clinical psychologist is £25,783. As your career progresses you could earn between £47,088 and £81,000 or higher. Salaries in private practice vary.

There are many rewarding careers that build on the combined disciplines of psychology and education, including prison education, the education of looked after children, lifelong learning, special educational needs, and community education.

Graduates have also pursued careers in education, teaching English as a foreign language, government and local authorities, research, health and social care, management, and marketing.

Modules

Your first year will introduce you to key principles in educational theory and policy, together with statistics and research methods, and aspects of biological, social, and developmental psychology.

In your second and third years, you can choose from an extensive range of education and psychology options alongside compulsory core modules.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Study Abroad and Global Opportunities

To learn more about study abroad, visit our Go Global webpages. Enrolment on a programme with a semester/year abroad does not guarantee you a semester/year abroad placement. Spaces are limited and subject to a competitive selection process. In the event you do not secure a semester/year abroad placement, you will be transferred to the standard variant of your degree scheme without a semester or year abroad.

International summer programmes are open to students from all schools. Programmes typically range from 2 to 6 weeks, across destinations such as Sri Lanka, South Korea, Fiji, Bali, the USA and across Europe. For more information about programmes and eligibility visit our Summer Abroad webpages.
