Course Overview

Are you looking for a Finance degree which will give you a competitive edge? The BSc Finance with a Foundation Year degree at Swansea University will do just that.

If you don’t achieve the necessary grades to enrol on to the BSc Finance course, the BSc Finance with a Foundation Year degree is for you.

The Foundation Year is an excellent pathway to gaining the required knowledge and skills in finance before joining Year 1 students of the BSc Finance degree within the School of Management.

If a career as a stockbroker, investment banker or finance analyst excites you or if you see yourself as an actuary, financial manager or data analyst; then this four year degree is the best grounding for the financial career of your choice.

As a finance specialist you will play a fundamental role in the running of a business – big or small. Managing budgets and taxes, financial reporting, completing audits - all are critical in ensuring that a business or organisation runs as effectively and successfully as possible.

The Foundation Year is taught at The College, located next to the School of Management. Once you complete this year, you will move to the School of Management building for the remainder of your studies.

Your Finance with a Foundation Year Experience

Finance at Swansea is a flexible degree with the chance to study abroad for a year, or work in industry for a year. This can give you a real competitive advantage and will broaden your horizons when it comes to seeking employment.

Your first year (the Foundation Year) is taught at The College, located next to the School of Management, and your final three years are taught within the School of Management itself.

Our wide selection of optional modules which you can choose in your final two years of study, will allow you to shape the degree towards your career goals. The course itself blends theory, empirical evidence and practical application. You will build a strong financial foundation and develop essential transferable skills allowing you to analyse and critically evaluate real-world financial market issues and concepts.

Teaching at Swansea is partly informed by research, and our staff have hands-on experience of both theory and practice, meaning you can benefit from their academic expertise and real-world know-how.

During your time with us, you will also have full access to our cutting edge video and digital content creation suite and state-of-the-art facilities at the School of Management.

As well as setting you up for a career as a financial specialist within a business, we also have support services available to help you start your own business. This is particularly useful for those students wanting to become independent financial analysts, managers or auditors. The service offers a mentoring route, using a wealth of industry experience.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops allow for group working and demonstrations.  Our approach may also include the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Lecture recordings allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

  • One-to-one support to improve your academic Welsh language skills.
  • An opportunity to gain an additional free qualification that serves as evidence of your Welsh language ability for future employers.
