The Medical School and Hywel Dda
The Medical School has strong links with its local health board Hywel Dda University Health Board.
Hywel Dda provides healthcare services to a total population of around 384,000 throughout Carmarthenshire (183,936), Ceredigion (79,488) and Pembrokeshire (120,576). It provides Acute, Primary, Community, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities services via General and Community Hospitals, Health Centres, GPs, Dentists, Pharmacists and Optometrists and other sites.
The Health Board is a University Health Board and as such there is excellent partnership working and collaboration between Swansea University and the health board, working together to ultimately improve patient care and also helping to address the challenges in sustaining the medical workforce in Wales.
Training Doctors for Mid and West Wales
Following the expansion of Medical School places in Wales in July 2018, the Medical School is now working with Hywel Dda to increase opportunities in Mid and West Wales. Medical students will undertake as much of their studies as possible in community based settings to reflect Welsh Government policy that care should be delivered as close to patients’ homes as possible. The increase in places will also support widening access to medicine and increasing diversity within the medical profession while also addressing local population health needs.
