Cardiff to host Wales’s largest university sports festival.
As the countdown to the Welsh Varsity 2025 begins, anticipation is building for one of the biggest events in the UK’s sporting calendar. This year see’s Cardiff University take on the hosting duties, with an unforgettable day of fierce competition and festive sporting celebrations.
Originating as a rugby showdown between Swansea and Cardiff University, the Welsh Varsity has since evolved into a premier multi-sporting event. Teams from both institutions look to take on one another in a range of sports to claim the coveted Welsh Varsity shield, continuing a proud tradition of spirited rivalry and camaraderie.
Taking place on the 9th April, the day will unfold in venues across Cardiff City Centre, including Sophia Gardens, Sport Wales and the iconic Cardiff Arms Park for the final fixture of the day – Swansea University v Cardiff University Men’s rugby game! The day offers an incredible opportunity for students, staff, alumni and supporters to unite and cheer for their team, all while soaking up the atmosphere. Whether you’re a seasoned Welsh Varsity attendee or experiencing it for the first time, this event is a key memory for students in their university journey.
The scale of the Welsh Varsity requires coordination from all, bringing together the Students’ Union, Sport Swansea, and dedicated staff to ensure the day is a success! From competitive fixtures to social celebrations throughout the day, the Welsh Varsity is a testament to the strong sense of community shared by both universities.
The Green and White Army, also known as our sporting fans, will be out in full force to support our teams and cheer them on in their green and white merchandise in what we hope will be a victorious day.
Cameron Messetter, Swansea University’s elected Sports Officer, expressed his excitement for the event:
“With the start of the new year comes fresh opportunities, and Welsh Varsity is just 11 weeks away! Our team has been hard at work, crafting promotional material and tackling the logistics of this monumental event. The SU team has been phenomenal, gearing up for the big Launch Party on January 27th. Together with five incredible venues on Wind Street, we're ready to throw a spectacular welcome back for our students. We can’t wait to sell out Cardiff Arms Park and see it bursting with the Green and White Army.
Behind the scenes, the work is already well underway to ensure every detail is in place for an unforgettable day. To all the contributors and organisers, your efforts mean the world – this is a day that leaves a lasting impression on players and spectators alike.
