Another year, another glorious day in Cardiff

Another epic chapter in the history of Welsh Varsity has been written – and what a day it was! On April 9th, under glorious sunshine, Cardiff came alive with the roar of thousands of students as Swansea and Cardiff Universities went head-to-head in the biggest student sporting event in Wales.

From as early as 5:45am, Swansea teams were on the road, full of energy and ambition, ready to represent the green and white across Cardiff’s top sporting venues – from Llanrumney to Sophia Gardens, Sport Wales, and the legendary Principality Stadium.

The city was a vibrant sea of green and red, with pride, passion, and friendly rivalry on full display. And while Cardiff clinched the overall Varsity Shield, the day was packed with unforgettable Swansea victories, fierce battles, and historic moments.

 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY

Rowing Success
The Varsity week kicked off in spectacular fashion with our men’s and women’s rowing teams claiming back-to-back victories over Cardiff in the annual boat race. That’s two years in a row of dominance on the water – with the BBC reporting on this year’s event- read more here.

Netball History Made
A heart-stopping 42-40 victory saw our netball team break a 14-year losing streak against Cardiff – and what a way to do it! Sadie Mellalieu, Student Sport Manager, called it “one of the best Welsh Varsity moments she’s ever experienced”. Huge congratulations to the squad for this iconic win!

First-Time Triumphs
It was also a Varsity of firsts!

  • Our women’s football team secured their first win of the season over Cardiff.
  • Futsal and Powerlifting made their Varsity debut – and both teams smashed it with impressive wins!

More Green Wins!
We also took home victories in:

  • Sailing
  • Men’s Triathlon
  • Mixed Table Tennis
  • Men’s Ultimate Frisbee
  • Baseball
  • Rugby League
  • Women’s Basketball

Every one of these teams did Swansea proud – your grit and spirit didn’t go unnoticed!

The Big Finale at the Principality
As the sun set over Cardiff, all eyes turned to the Principality Stadium for the showcase rugby matches. With the stands packed and voices echoing through the venue, our men’s and women’s rugby teams left everything on the pitch. While the results didn’t swing our way, the atmosphere, sportsmanship, and effort were nothing short of legendary.

Onward to Swansea 2026!
We may not have brought the shield home this time, but the heart, pride, and passion of Swansea shone brighter than ever. Next year, we’re bringing the battle home as Varsity 2026 lands at Swansea Bay Sports Park.

A massive thank you to all the players, coaches, volunteers, staff, and fans who made this day one to remember. Here’s to sport, spirit, and Swansea – see you next year for an even bigger Varsity!
