Verity Cook with the para-athletes in Paris

Another staff member off to Paris with Team GB!

As one of our staff members returns from the Paris Olympics, another is off to the Paralympics!

Verity Cook, one of our Athlete Support Officers at Swansea University, has been selected as a Team Manager for the Team GB swimming squad for the 2024 Paris Paralympics!

This incredible opportunity came around after Verity was asked to organise an event for the Team GB Paralympic team in her role as Event Manager with Swim Wales, before being approached by the head coach of Team GB offering Verity the chance to join the team as a Team Manager. Three years later, she if off to the Paris Paralympics with Team GB!

Verity will be taking to the world stage where she will be assisting the athletes in many ways. Her role as Team Manager is varied, ranging from ensuring athletes get from the village to the competition on time, to personal support, for example, tapping the visually impaired athletes to ensure they don’t hit their heads on the wall. There are a range of athlete classifications that Verity will be working with whilst out in Paris, ranging from visual, intellectual and physical impairments.

Verity also described her Paralympics role as “being a bit of a professional mum to the athletes whilst they’re away travelling” of which we are certain Verity will deliver to the highest standard!

We are extremely proud of Verity and her success this year, and we can’t wait to see her shine on the world stage as she supports the athletes in their competition’s.

We have a range of Welsh athletes representing Team GB in the Paralympic Games this year, including Swansea University alumni and five-time Paralympic medallist David Smith OBE, who will be competing in Boccia. Good luck David, we wish you all the best!
