EG-003
Applied Engineering
This course provides an introduction to the principles of statics, dynamics and thermo-fluid mechanics relevant to engineering. A practical component will be used to complement taught theory.

EG-101
Chemical Engineering Laboratory
This module provides practical experience of conducting bench-scale experimental studies on a variety of systems (comprised of both apparatus and contents) in order to observe, record and characterise the behaviour of these systems under specified conditions. Students are typically required to determine factors which may influence a system¿s overall response, for example, experimental results can be linked with theory (from lecture-based modules or equivalently from directed reading) to determine physical or thermochemical properties of materials, or, to evaluate how such properties influence the performance of the system. Wider analysis aims to link and develop skills in data acquisition and processing, error analysis, and interpretation of experimental results. As a component part of these studies, students will build experience of conducting experiments in a laboratory environment, documenting results, organisation and communication of experimental results and analysis through both tabular and graphical formats accompanied by written discussion; this being evidenced first through maintenance of their own laboratory notebooks and secondly through technical report writing exercises.

EG-1011
Chemical Engineering Practice
This module introduces students to the essential practical and professional skills required of a chemical engineer. Students will gain experience of computer-aided drawing packages to produce engineering drawings to internationally recognised standards, and will develop ICT skills in Word and Excel to support engineering problem-solving and the preparation of technical reports, with particular emphasis on clarity, presentation, and professional standards. Ethical design, academic integrity, and employability are emphasised throughout, including engagement with the Swansea Employability Award.
In parallel, students will undertake bench-scale experimental studies to observe, record, and analyse the behaviour of engineering systems under specified conditions. Experiments are linked with theoretical concepts to determine material and thermochemical properties, evaluate system performance, and develop skills in data acquisition, error analysis, and interpretation. Students will maintain laboratory notebooks and prepare structured written reports, using both tabular and graphical formats, thereby consolidating their ability to document, analyse, and communicate experimental results effectively.

EG-1013
Environmental Engineering and Sustainability
This module introduces core environmental challenges relevant to engineering, focusing on the role of chemical engineers in addressing issues related to energy and resource use, pollution, climate change, and sustainability. Lectures are complemented by laboratory activities and group projects, with real-world case studies used to contextualise the content. Students will develop foundational skills for evaluating the environmental consequences of engineering decisions and for contributing to more sustainable solutions.

EG-1014
Process Principles & Design
This module develops the fundamental tools required for the analysis and design of chemical and biochemical processes, with a focus on material and energy flows, process efficiency, and safety considerations. Students will learn to construct complete mass and energy balances, including systems with recycle and by-pass streams, and to apply vapour¿liquid equilibrium concepts to the design of basic unit operations. Attention is given to hazards associated with flammable materials and vapour pressure., and students are encouraged to evaluate the safety implications of their chosen designs. Alongside technical content, the module emphasises the development of core engineering skills through team-based project work. Students tackle open-ended design problems, gaining experience of project management, collaborative working, professional reporting, and evaluating the safety implications of their chosen designs. Projects are student-led, with staff support and feedback provided throughout, and culminate in the production of a detailed design report as a major assessed component.

EGA102
Chemical Process Analysis and Design
Students are required to tackle a variety of engineering problems and to work within a team to deliver results. This module tests a variety of fundamental engineering skills, highlights the importance of basic project management skills and serves to provide experience of working in partnership with others. Projects are student-led with support and feedback available from the staff during project classes. The module considers the formulation of both material and energy balances for operations which involve either recycle or by-pass systems, and is aligned with key concepts introduced in EG100 (Chemical Process Principles). The module also considers vapour-liquid equilibria with application to the basic design of unit operations. These concepts are then used to assist the design a manufacturing process and students are encouraged to further assess the safety impact of their chosen design. The team design project leads to the production of a design report which is the major assessed component within the module.
> Students will be required to complete a review which provides assessment of the team and individual team member performances.
