Whilst choosing a university, the ability to study through the medium of Welsh was very important to me. Swansea University offer Biochemistry partly in Welsh. On the open day the campus felt homely and the staff were friendly, supportive and very enthusiastic about the course.
At school, Biology and Chemistry were my favourite subjects. I have a keen interest in the changes that happen to the body as it suffers from different diseases, especially degenerative conditions.
Therefore, studying Biochemistry expands my understanding of these subjects and I had the chance to do a research project on a degenerative disease in my fourth year.
Continuing to study through the medium of Welsh felt like a natural step for me to take at University. By studying in Welsh I was part of the Welsh tutorial group and I had some of my lectures through the medium of Welsh, and support with laboratory sessions. I had the fantastic opportunity in my fourth year to go on placement to do a research project at Cardiff University with Welsh speaking supervisors.
I received the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's Incentive Scholarship for the first three years of my course and an Academy Hywel Teifi bursary for my final year. The extra money has been a big support as I buy resources and helping with living costs and travelling whilst studying. The extra money really did help take the financial pressure off!
I strongly encourage students who are considering studying through the medium of Welsh to do so! I've received so many opportunities through studying in Welsh including being an ambassador for the Coleg Cymraeg in my second year and I received the Welsh Language Skills Certificate. Studying through the medium of Welsh opens doors for you!
