Course Overview

On our TESOL and English Literature degree, you will be able to gain the knowledge and skills to teach English as a second language, as well as exploring aspects of English literature from gothic fiction to creative writing.

Teaching English is a great way to see the world and this degree will provide practical and transferable skills to open up a range of exciting career opportunities.

During your three-year degree you’ll learn about theory and practice, language teaching methodology, vocabulary, grammar and meaning, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition and discourse analysis.

You will also be able to study a semester in the USA, Hong Kong or Singapore – an exciting experience, which will further enhance your career prospects.

In your second year, you have the option of taking the internationally recognised Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), a professional qualification for teachers of English as a foreign language.

You will also be able to develop programming skills through computer-assisted language learning materials and receive training in research methods including reporting and analysis of data.

Your English Literature and Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages Experience

We offer varied and flexible course content, so you can shape your degree to your own interests.

You will be able to explore the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language, language teaching methodology, vocabulary, grammar and meaning, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition and discourse analysis.

You can choose English Literature modules covering gothic and genre fiction, gender and culture, renaissance literature, national and global literatures, modernity and contemporary writing, nineteenth century literature, creative writing and professional writing.

Throughout your degree you will have a personal tutor who will provide you with pastoral and academic support.

In your second year, you have the chance to spend a semester studying abroad, further enhancing your student experience and career prospects.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Additional Costs

Access to your own digital device/the appropriate IT kit will be essential during your time studying at Swansea University. Access to wifi in your accommodation will also be essential to allow you to fully engage with your programme. We care about our students and our aim is to ensure that you achieve the best degree classification. We have a personal mentoring system where you will be allocated a personal tutor. We also have an “open door” policy where our academic teachers are available to talk to you at any time about any queries or academic concerns you may have.

Spaces are limited and subject to a competitive selection process. Year in Industry

This course offers you the opportunity to spend a Year In Industry, in the UK or overseas*, giving valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for only paid placements which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Although securing a placement is the responsibility of the student, we work with a number of organisations who provide a range of placement opportunities. Students are also supported throughout their application journey with advice, guidance and additional resources. If you are unable to secure a placement by the end of the second year of your studies, you will transfer onto the equivalent degree programme.
