Tuition Fee Loan

Students living in Scotland who are starting their studies in academic year 2024/25 can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan of up to £9,250 to cover the full cost of tuition fees (subject to terms and conditions). They can do this by applying to Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

Tuition Fee Loan payments will be made directly to the University upon confirmation of your attendance each term, therefore no up-front payment is required.

Maintenance Loan and Bursaries

Funding towards a students' living costs is made up of maintenance loans and bursaries. The amount you are entitled to will be dependent on whether you are an independent student and your household income, as demonstrated in the table below. The rate of student loan you will receive will be the same whether you live at home or choose to live away from home. 

Young Student Bursary (YSB) 

A maximum bursary of £2,000 will be made if your household income is £20,999 a year or less. If your household income is over £34,000 a year you will not qualify for a YSB and your living cost support will be entirely through a student loan.

Independent Student Bursary (ISB)

The maximum amount available will be £1,000 if your household income is £20,999 or less a year or if you are single. If your household income is over £21,000 a year you will not qualify for an ISB and your living cost support will be entirely through a student loan.

Maintenance payments are paid direct to you in 3 instalments.  Your 1st instalment will be paid after you have enrolled and collected your ID card (the subsequent 2 instalments will be paid on the 1st day of the Spring and Summer terms).

Supplementary Grants

Students with dependent children, adult dependents, a disability or are classed as a Care Leaver may be entitled to additional help. 

Students who are widowed, divorced, separated or single with at least one dependant child may be eligible for the Lone Parents’ Grant of £1,305 from SAAS.

You can claim this income-assessed grant for your husband, wife, civil partner or partner.

You cannot claim this grant for another student. If your husband, wife, civil partner or partner has any income, this may affect your entitlement. SAAS will pay up to £2,640 to cover the full 52 weeks from the first day of the academic year of your course.

If you were previously in care, we can pay a Vacation grant for care leavers of up to £105 a week to help with accommodation costs in the long (summer) vacation.
