Introduction to Studying Languages for Business Students
This module is an introduction to language learning for business students enrolled onto the languages¿ pathway. The students will take part in taster sessions for each language offered at beginner¿s level and will gain insight into business related matters of countries in which the languages are spoken. In addition, the students will receive training in language learning techniques, terminology, and intercultural awareness.

You¿ll continue to broaden your vocabulary and consolidate your understanding of more complex grammatical structures, with a particular focus on using German in professional and specialised contexts at an advanced intermediate level. You will explore contemporary issues in German-speaking societies, deepening your cultural awareness and analytical skills.
A significant emphasis is placed on the use of language in professional settings. You¿ll engage with authentic materials that reflect real-world communication and current debates in German-speaking countries.
Through weekly classes taught primarily in German, you¿ll develop your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in a supportive and engaging setting. Beyond the classroom, you¿ll be encouraged to take responsibility for your learning through regular independent study, enabling you to make steady progress throughout the term.

This module builds on the skills and knowledge acquired in the first year of study, and will equip students with the skills needed to use German in more complex social and professional contexts. It concentrates on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken German, enabling students to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. It aims to establish a firm grammatical understanding of the language, and extending students' vocabulary to read, write, interpret and debate issues related to contemporary German society and culture appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Moreover, the module further enhances students¿ employability by systematically developing a personal professional career planning portfolio, providing a sound insight into the world of work. It is typically taken in conjunction with MLG260B. Classes will be mainly conducted in German.

German Language 2B
This modules builds on and consolidates the skills and knowledge acquired in MLG260A by concentrating on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken German appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It specifically aims to prepare students for their Year Abroad and/or extend intercultural awareness, widening students¿ vocabulary to read, write and do presentations about topics related to Germany. The module also aims to enhance students' employability by training them them to give a successful presentation using appropriate IT applications. It is typically taken in conjunction with MLG260A. Classes will be conducted mainly in German. There is also a Welsh-medium version of the module.

This module is the culmination of advanced level study of German which will equip students with the skills needed to communicate orally and in writing at a near-native level. This module aims to consolidate and extend the language skills developed by students from the beginners and advanced language pathways. It concentrates on developing clarity, fluency, organisation, structure and accuracy in written and spoken German, establishing a firm understanding of the finer points of the language relating to grammar and discourse, and extending students¿ vocabulary to read, write, and speak about issues related to contemporary German society and culture. Classes are mainly conducted in German. It is typically taken in conjunction with MLG301B.

German General Language 3B
This module offers practice and development of skills in translation from English into German at an advanced level, as well as German oral and communication skills. Writing and oral classes will give you practice in the exercises covered by the module. Following an integrated teaching approach you will also be able to reinforce and expand your existing grammatical knowledge in a series of grammar workshops. One hour per week is dedicated to oral practice, further increasing your speaking and listening skills. You are expected to take part in class discussions with a native speaker of German based on written texts, audio and video materials. All classes are conducted mainly through the medium of the target language. In addition to class work, students are expected to undertake extensive private study.

This is a combination of the TB2 General Language and Translation Workshop module. It builds on and consolidates the skills and knowledge acquired in MLG390A by concentrating on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken German appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It specifically aims to extend students¿ intercultural awareness and widen students¿ vocabulary to read, write and do presentations about topics related to German society and culture. The module also aims to enhance students' employability by training them to give a successful presentation using appropriate IT applications. This module further develops and improves your practical skills in translating from German into English, developing awareness of different types of translation and different techniques required of translators and strategies employed by them. Students will work on different text types and conduct comparative analysis of relevant areas of German and English language and culture.
The General Language classes will be mainly conducted in German.

Dialogue Interpreting
This module, which builds on the introduction to Interpreting provided in Year 1 by MLT100 Concepts in Translation and Interpreting, will develop practical strategies and techniques for performing Dialogue Interpreting between parties who do not speak each other's language, as well as oral translation of relevant documents at sight. There will typically be a mixture of short lectures on relevant aspects of Interpreting Theory (especially professional ethics), live bilingual and multilingual scenarios, and language laboratory practical sessions in preparation for assessment. The assessment will be two Sight Translations, one in each direction (40%) and one Dialogue Practical Class Test (both directions) in the Lab (60%). A wide range of materials will be available on Blackboard to practice sight translation and interpreting in your own time.

Healthcare Interpreting
Healthcare interpreting plays an essential role in facilitating communication between healthcare providers and patients who speak different languages or have limited proficiency in the language used by the provider, thus ensuring that all patients have access to the medical information and services they need.
Healthcare interpreters work in various settings, including doctor¿s offices, hospitals, clinics, and mental health facilities, and they require a sound knowledge of medical terminology in both languages, as well as a good understanding of cultural differences that might affect communication in order to interpret accurately and in a culturally appropriate way.
In this module you will develop strategies and techniques to perform simultaneous whispering interpreting and dialogue interpreting (including some telephone interpreting, plus an opportunity to try sight translation) in the domain of healthcare. There will be a mixture of interactive lectures on interpreting theory, ethics, and practice, together with live and language laboratory practice sessions on the topic of various conditions and diseases.

Conference Interpreting
This module will help students develop strategies and techniques to perform Conference Interpreting in Consecutive as well as Simultaneous modalities, with a focus on the latter. It involves the advanced development of multilingual skills, as well as interpersonal/intercultural communication skills (active listening, memory retention, time lag, anticipation, reformulation, delivery). Students will typically be exposed to authentic talks, lectures, conference papers, debates and speeches delivered by United Nations delegates, European Parliamentarians, TED.com Presenters, the UK's Political Speech Archive, BBC World programmes, YouTube, The Why Channel, and other countries' politicians, lecturers and experts in various fields. The contexts would typically include current affairs and topics of political, sociocultural, economic, scientific, technological and environmental impact in both cultures and their corresponding terminologies. Students will also be encouraged to research and read parallel texts for confidence building knowledge expansion and glossary creation. Training will take place in a fully-equipped Interpreting Suite (delegate units and booths).
Successful candidates will be well prepared to apply for placement opportunities at the European Commission Directorate-General for Interpretation and/or The Internship Programme at the United Nations Offices either in Geneva or in New York.
Students will be expected to do extensive guided private study, which should include exercises, e.g. mental agility exercises, bi-directional clozing, numerical contextualization and simplification tasks, reformulation and improvisation exercises, as well as tasks for mnemonic activation (to activate and automatize linguistic reflexes through the use of synonyms, antonyms, definitions, paraphrasing, hypernyms etc.).

Semester Abroad at Technische Hochschule Köln
This module is only available to students who have successfully completed Year 1 of the Extended MA Professional Translation / Translation & Interpreting Programme. This module, is made up of approved modules totalling 30 ECTS selected from the portfolio offered by the host institution, the Technische Hochschule Köln (THK). This partner is responsible for all teaching and assessment. Module marks are returned to Swansea, converted, weighted proportionally to credit and combined into a single composite mark.
