This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of crystalline materials, building from atomic structure to macroscopic properties. Students explore how atoms arrange in crystals, how waves propagate through periodic lattices, and how quantum mechanics governs electronic and magnetic behaviour. The course progresses from structural characterisation using diffraction, through lattice vibrations and thermal properties, to electronic transport in metals and semiconductors. Emphasis is placed on connecting microscopic quantum mechanical principles to measurable material properties and technological applications, including semiconductor devices and magnetic materials.
The basic concepts of quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms and quantum computers are introduced. Students will reach an understanding of some of today¿s most relevant quantum algorithms, including Grover's search algorithm and Shor¿s algorithm for factoring, as well as quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography protocols. Physical realisations are reviewed. Density matrices are discussed in details. Modern developments, such as quantum supremacy, are included.
