Mediate Guru Virtual Client Counselling Competition- Swansea Win!

When January comes around, students are often focused on assessments and 2025 was no different. However, competition season doesn’t stop and as is often the case, this January was the time for the first skills event of 2025- the Mediate Guru Virtual Client Counselling Competition. Mediate Guru run a number of events throughout the year, in this skill as well as negotiation and mediation, and Swansea frequently enter teams, giving students the chance to engage with students from around the world and get judges feedback from different jurisdictions.

This year, for the first time, Swansea won the competition, with a fantastic performance from Nour Altirifi, a second-year transfer student who has acclimatised to our Communication Skills programme superbly since moving her studies to South Wales. Playing the role of Counsel, she had to develop a teamwork dynamic with her co-counsel, with minimal opportunity for preparation, and then, together, they had to develop a professional relationship with their clients, discover the events that had led them to their office, and then advice them as to their best path forward.

This required a huge range of skills, including teamwork, the ability to think on her feet and to adapt the conversation levels based on the understanding of the client in front of them. After the preliminary rounds, quarter finals, semi finals and final, Nour was awarded the overall title- a fantastic performance on her competition debut. A huge congratulations to Nour, and thank you to Mediate Guru for organising.
