Morgan McEachen, a recent graduate of the Trent-Swansea Partnership, has secured a role working with victims of domestic violence, allowing her to put the skills and knowledge learned at Swansea directly into practice.
Morgan is an international graduate from Canada, who studied the LLB Law at Swansea University. She feels that the volunteer and work experience she gained through the university provided her with the foundation and the confidence to pursue a career in family law.
During her time at Swansea, Morgan volunteered at the Swansea Law Clinic, where she had the opportunity to shadow law appointments, take case notes for practicing lawyers, and work on the Law Clinic Day of Climate Justice. Her volunteer work at the Clinic provided a hands-on approach to learning about law, and the opportunity to partake in work that benefitted the wider community.
In addition to volunteer work, Morgan had the opportunity to complete work experience at Smith Llewelyn Partnership in Swansea. In this role, she joined clients and solicitors in court, read legal case files, and shadowed solicitors in various legal areas.
This experience helped develop her communication and advocacy skills and furthered her practical knowledge of practicing law. Morgan was also granted the opportunity to shadow District Judge Graham Jones at the Port Talbot Justice Centre in Wales, UK. This experience provided her with valuable insight into the inter-workings of Public Law court cases in Family Law and the Court of Protection.
Following this, in August 2024, Morgan will start work as an Articling Student at Luke’s Place in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Luke’s Place is a non-profit organisation that provides family legal services to women and children experiencing intimate partner violence. She looks forward to providing legal services to vulnerable people and applying an intersectional feminist lens to address violence against women through family law.
Speaking of her experiences, Morgan said:
“The experiences I gained through Swansea University provided me with enlightening educational and applied experiences that have truly helped me succeed post-law school. I am grateful for the professional relationships and friendships I gained and the support I received from my mentors and professors at Swansea!”
