Seven people from Swansea University are among the new Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales.

They join more than 700 Fellows elected to the Learned Society of Wales, representing excellence in the sciences, humanities, arts, social sciences and other fields. The new Fellows are drawn from academia, the public and health service, and Wales’ wider civic and cultural life. They are elected because of their expertise and experience, and their research and knowledge leadership.

The Learned Society of Wales harnesses its Fellows’ expertise to champion research, contribute expertise, and promote learning and debate.

The Swansea Fellows are:

  • Dr Mahaboob Basha, External Relations and Engagement Manager, Faculty of Science & Engineering;
  • Dr Zubeyde Bayram-Weston, Senior lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Health & Life Science;
  • Professor Delyth James, Professor in Pharmacy & Behavioural Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Health & Life Science;
  • Professor Emeritus Arthur Lees, Faculty of Science & Engineering;
  • Professor Rhiannon Owen, Professor of Statistics, Faculty of Medicine, Health & Life Science;
  • Sîan Williams, Head of Cultural Collections Engagement and Curation; and,
  • Dr Yan Wu, Associate Professor in Media and Communication, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.

President of the LSW Professor Hywel Thomas,  said: “We face a huge number of challenges, from climate change to political turmoil to emerging health threats. The answer to so many of these problems will be found in research and robust civic institutions. That expertise is evident in our new Fellows. I’m delighted to welcome them to the Learned Society of Wales.”
