Wales has driven innovation for centuries—from copper pioneer Robert Morris to tech titan Sir Terry Matthews. Now, a new book is set to inspire the next generation of innovators shaping the region’s future.
Inspiring Wealth Creators by Professor Kenneth Board shares the stories of 38 influential figures—entrepreneurs, business leaders, and visionaries—all with ties to the University, the City of Swansea, and South Wales.
As a Swansea graduate and entrepreneur himself, Professor Board offers a unique insider’s view of these impressive individuals.
Professor Board, Professor Emeritus at Swansea University’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said: “Entrepreneurs have long been the backbone of Wales' economic evolution, transforming bold ideas into lasting industries. Inspiring Wealth Creators celebrates this spirit—showcasing the determination, ingenuity, and impact of those who have shaped the region’s business landscape.”
More than just a celebration of success, the book bridges generations, showcasing how past pioneers continue to inspire Wales’ future business leaders.
One standout example featured is CSconnected, a groundbreaking semiconductor cluster that unites researchers, businesses, and policymakers to accelerate technological advancements.
Students—including those from Swansea University—play a crucial role, contributing their skills and entrepreneurial vision to the semiconductor cluster’s long-term success.
In his book, Professor Board said: “The participation of students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels…helps to foster the recruitment of experienced and high-calibre staff for the cluster to grow, but also opens up the possibility of some of them having ideas to become entrepreneurs.
“The future success of the cluster to become successful on a large scale, and the main theme of this book, is to have in the longer term such ongoing replenishment and renewal.”
One of the entrepreneurs featured in the book, Dr David O’Brien, reinforces this idea, emphasising the importance of preparing the next generation.
Dr O’Brien, a Swansea University graduate and former Silicon Valley technology executive, said: “All educational programs at all ages and levels need a portion of their resources devoted to researching and teaching the ‘future’. Open-mindedness, adaptability and early adoption will be a critical element for society in general.”
Published by Native Book Publishing, Inspiring Wealth Creators was launched at Swansea University’s Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM).
The book, a must-read for innovators and business leaders shaping the next era of economic growth in Wales, is now available on Amazon.
