Swansea University has conferred an honorary doctorate in engineering on Olufolahan Olumide, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to engineering, architecture, and global enterprise over a remarkable 50-year career.
Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Mr Olumide began his academic journey at Swansea University in the 1960s after receiving a prestigious scholarship from Shell-BP Nigeria Ltd. He initially studied mechanical engineering before transitioning to civil engineering, where he was mentored by the world-renowned Professor Olek Zienkiewicz — an experience he has described as transformative.
After graduating in 1972, Mr Olumide started his professional career with Swansea City Council’s highway bridges department. He later returned to Nigeria to work for Shell-BP and then pursued further studies in North America. He earned a master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Toronto, gaining valuable practical experience as an intern engineer in Canada. He then moved to California to obtain a second master’s degree in architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
Mr Olumide’s career has taken him across the globe, where he has seamlessly bridged the worlds of engineering and architecture. After returning to Nigeria, he lectured in structural engineering at the University of Ilorin and joined Modulor Group Architects, where he became a registered architect and member of the Nigerian Institute of Architects.
In 1987, he founded Folio Designs and Folio Construction Ltd, a full-service design and construction firm in Lagos. He expanded his entrepreneurial vision in 2004 by establishing Folio Designs Development & Investment, Inc in Baltimore, USA, a company focused on revitalising neglected urban properties into vibrant investment opportunities.
Currently, Mr Olumide serves as CEO of Folio Designs and Folio Construction Ltd in Lagos, and is also the founder of Folio Tech Institute, which provides practical, skills-based training for students in technology and design fields.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr Olumide is also an accomplished artist and active community leader. He founded the Iroko African Art Gallery & Café in Baltimore, is a founding member of the African Chamber of Commerce in the Baltimore Metropolitan area, and plays an active role in his church community.
Now serving as Chairperson of the Swansea University Alumni Nigeria Board of Trustees, Mr Olumide remains deeply connected to his alma mater.
Upon receiving this honorary award, Mr Olumide said: "I am very much overwhelmed and humbly grateful for the award. Working and joining hands to grow Swansea Alumni in Nigeria has been a joy and privilege. I commend Swansea University on being deeply committed to growing the interest of foreign students in the institution”.
