A Swansea University researcher has received a Health and Care Research Wales Doctoral Fellowship award for his work to explore the safety of medicines.
Research officer and data scientist Timothy Osborne is based in the Medical School and will study patterns in how medicines are prescribed, exploring which groups of people are most at risk of harm from medications and identifying the factors that influence medication safety.
His research will make use of secure anonymised health data from across the Welsh population, held within the SAIL Databank, based at Swansea University. The findings will help inform safer prescribing practices and support policies to reduce health inequalities.
Timothy, who holds a BSc and MSc in mathematics from Swansea, is one of 14 recipients of a personal award from the Health and Care Research Wales Faculty.
He said: “I am delighted to have been awarded the doctoral fellowship. It gives me the opportunity to pursue a PhD while continuing my research into the safer use of medicines.
“This support will allow me to undertake specialist training and work with an excellent supervisory team to develop my skills as an independent researcher, while also collaborating closely with clinicians, policymakers, and the public to ensure my findings have real-world impact.”
Praising all the personal awardees, Head of Programmes at Health and Care Research Wales Michael Bowdery said: “Their diverse and compelling proposals reflect the strength of research talent across Wales and these awards will support their continued development and contribution to their chosen fields.”
